High Atlas Mountains

Climate, Things to Do & See

High Atlas Mountains are Morocco’s most spectacular mountain region, stretching across the country and offering dramatic peaks, Berber villages, deep valleys, waterfalls, and excellent trekking opportunities. Marrakech is the main gateway for exploring the High Atlas, particularly the Toubkal and M'Goun mountain areas.
Marrakech is the most convenient starting point for many High Atlas adventures. From the city, travelers can reach mountain villages, trekking routes, valleys, and trailheads by road. It is particularly well positioned for accessing the Toubkal National Park to the south and the M'Goun region further east. The High Atlas is ideal for travelers interested in trekking, hiking, mountains, nature, adventure, photography, and Berber culture. Toubkal is generally the better choice for travelers looking for a famous high-altitude summit, while M'Goun offers a more remote experience with valleys, gorges, villages, and longer trekking routes.

M’Goun National Park & Valley

  • M’Goun Massif – A dramatic mountain region known for rugged landscapes, high plateaus, valleys, and remote villages.
  • M’Goun summit – A major trekking objective, reaching around 4,071 metres.
  • Aït Bouguemez Valley – Often called the “Happy Valley,” it is known for fertile landscapes, traditional villages, and spectacular mountain scenery.
  • M’Goun Gorge – A dramatic canyon popular with trekkers and adventure travelers.
  • Berber villages & culture – Experience traditional architecture, agriculture, hospitality, and rural mountain life.
  • Long-distance trekking – The M’Goun area is particularly attractive for travelers seeking quieter, less-developed trails compared with Toubkal.

What's the weather like?

When to visit High Alas ?

The High Atlas has a mountain climate that varies considerably with altitude. Summers are generally warm to hot in the valleys but much cooler at higher elevations, while winters can be cold with significant snowfall on the highest peaks. Spring and autumn are particularly good for trekking, with pleasant daytime temperatures and cooler nights. Weather can change quickly in the mountains, so appropriate clothing and preparation are important.
